This display gives a brief account of the postal history of the Panama Canal Zone. Our member explains the background to the issue of stamps for the Canal Zone and gives examples of the different issues. Initially the stamps were overprints on Panama issues, later they were on USA issues, but from 1928 the Canal Zone had stamps that were truly its own. Issues ceased after 1979, when the zone was abolished, being fully returned to exclusive Panamanian control in 1999.
